Are you doing a great job?!
The recent recession has really tightened the nanny market here in the UK, which has meant lots of competition for ALL nanny positions. At KiwiOz we have seen a marked increase in the number of candidates coming through, many of whom have excellent experience and qualifications.
If you are looking for a job at the moment or are lucky enough to be in a good nanny job, you need to ensure you are promoting yourself or performing to the absolute best of your ability. This means going over and above the call of duty and truly impressing your employers or potential employers with your work ethic, ability to bond with and nurture the children, and professionalism on the job.
We have been asked by a lot of nannies recently for some tips and guidance on how to be ‘the best’. So here are a few!:
What to do:
- always be punctual
- if you are in a sole charge role, plan your day and keep a nanny diary of activities, events and points to note for the parents
- if you are in a shared charge role remember to use your initiative and keep up the communication with mum- ask her if there is anything you could improve on
- be flexible! Parents really appreciate it when their nanny can be flexible over and above their contractual hours. Be as flexible as possible whenever you can- and remember, more hours = more ££!
What to do if you aren’t happy in your role
The current market is a tough one and if you are in a nanny position but don’t feel like it is going well it is a big decision to leave.
Our first advice would be to have a good think over the weekend when you are rested and thinking clearly as to why the job is not going well. You need to remember that nannying is a professional vocation and if you are having any employment issues you should approach them in the most professional way possible.
The best way to do this is to clearly define the issues, think of some potential solutions and then discuss this with the parents. Remember that while any issues are being dealt with you need to maintain very high standards in your day to day role, so parents can acknowledge the effort you are still putting in.
