First aid

A dedicated nanny should always have a valid current first aid certificate, preferably a peadiatric first aid certificate. If you register with KiwiOz and you do not have a first aid certificate, you should be prepared to book in a pay for a course, usually in the region of £100.

Police checks

If you are coming to the UK from overseas you should always obtain a police check from your country of residence before you leave for the UK. If you arrive to the UK without a police check it can be applied for but this is time consuming and can be costly. If you do not have a police check and/ or if you have been living in the UK for more than 6 months you should be prepared to pay for a UK CRB police check, costing around £50.

Drivers licences

You can drive in the UK on an Australian or New Zealand licence for up to a year after your arrival to the country. HOWEVER, if you are required to drive for your nanny position the parents will want to insure you, and without a British licence the insurance premium will be much more costly.

It is very easy to switch your licence from a NZ or Australian licence to a British licence, and costs around £30. You can pick up the forms from your local post office, and once the application has been sent you will receive your British licence in around 10 days. On return to Australasia the process is the same, you can drive on your British licence for a year and swap it back at any stage.
