Working as a live in nanny
Many of our nannies prefer to work in live in positions particularly for their first year in London. Most of the roles are based in and around Central London, so you are well placed to enjoy all the city has to offer, without having to find your own accommodation! Live in roles often pay very well in proportion to your spending. For example, for a qualified and experienced candidate you could earn up to £350 per week after tax, with no living expenses. In comparison, in a daily role you might earn £450 per week, but from that you could expect to spend at least £150 per week on rent and food, if not more. So if you are hoping to save to travel or take money home, live in can be a very viable option! Some candidates are concerned that a live in role may restrict their space and freedom whilst living in London. Before making a decision on that front, we suggest you wait until you get here and see the living situation you would be in. Many families provide large double bedrooms for the nanny and you will often have an en suite bathroom, couch, TV/ internet in your room. In many cases the nanny quarters are purposefully separate from the family quarters to allow both parties privacy. On top of this good live in nannies are in very high demand so parents are aware the family needs to respect the space of the nanny in order to keep their candidate! You may be required to baby-sit once or twice during the week, however the rest of the time including the weekend is your own free time to do with what you want. The rules! There are some basic rules to go with working as a live in nanny. Each family is different on this front, but some basic rules include: - ask the parents before you invite friends to the house - be home at a respectable hour on a work night, no later than 12pm - use discretion when making calls from their landline- you might want to purchase as cheap calling card
Working as a daily nanny
Daily jobs are popular with nannies who are familiar with London and want to enjoy the social benefits living in a flat provides. Other candidates choose daily work if they are travelling with a partner or friend.
Daily roles often have slightly shorter hours than live in, for example 8-6.30 instead of 7.30-7pm. This is to allow you travel time to and from work. Often daily roles pay higher rates than live in but you do need to factor in living costs. Generally because parents are paying much more for daily nannies they expect a higher level of experience/ qualifications. Previous London based experience is worth its weight in gold, particularly if you have held a long term role with a previous family of at least 12 months or more.
