2007 salary survey results Feb 08 PDF Print E-mail

The annual Nannytax survey revealed last week that nannying is now a viable long- term career option for many, compared to what it once was - a transient, cash-in-hand job. For those that choose to follow this path, they can be rewarded with annual salaries of over £30,000. This is the first year that salaries have risen to this level.

For daily nannies in central London, average salaries have jumped 14% since the 2006 survey, which means nannies are now earning on average £466 net per week and £33,179 (gross per year). Live-in nannies have had a rise of 8.2%, earning on average £355 net per week and £24,545 (gross per year).

However, the survey stated clearly that those nannies reaching these salaries and higher, have professional qualifications and extensive experience. Some of these nannies have also had additional training in areas such as behavioural management, disabilities, weaning and sleep training.

For nannies interested in increasing their earning potential, having an up-to-date First Aid certificate, an enhanced CRB check, public liability insurance and Ofsted registration can be more attractive to potential families and gives a professional image.

The results of the survey illustrates how families are now willing to pay their nannies high salaries in return for quality care in the home which also has advantages over nursery care. These include longer childcare hours, flexibility for when children are ill, help with household duties, one-on-one care and the freedom for children to be out and about during the day.

From the KiwiOz perspective, the demand for experienced professional nannies outweighs the supply. This may have contributed to the dramatic increase in salaries that has been seen in the past 12 months as families need to offer attractive salaries to be competitive in the market.
