You, as the nanny are responsible for a lot of things. From childcare to planning meals and children's laundry, cleaning the child's bedroom and assisting in homework, playing chauffeur and organizing activities to keep the children entertained...
With everything going on, it is no surprise that you get so caught up in your employers' lives, but there is more to being a nanny than just changing diapers and organising play dates. Rewarding as it is to see how the children under your care develops, you too should have personal development as a nanny!
Clueless about it? The great thing about seeking personal development is that you don't really have to look far and hard for it - simply go online! Here are a few suggestions:
Access webinars or online courses.
Some sites offer free webinars on childcare and even meal planning. Try Healthy Kids, Healthy Future webinars and Serving Food in Child Care webinars from the National Food Service Management Institute (NFSMI).
Build your knowledge base.
There are plenty of websites and blogs dedicated to nannies. These sites often discuss issues about caring for children, dealing with their physical and emotional needs, along with other topics that affect nannies such as contract concerns, building up your portfolio, and working with families. They also often offer newsletters which you can sign up for.
Connect with fellow nannies
Who would better understand your concerns as a nanny than a fellow nanny? A fellow nanny can be a mentor and help you overcome difficulties you're facing, whether regarding the children you're taking care of, their families, activity suggestions or personal matters. Try looking for a group in Facebook or connect with other nannies through other social media platforms. As a nanny from overseas, being connected to others is essential. This can help you adapt more easily and avoid feeling homesick. Click here to checkout our own Facebook page where we share valuable info and resources for parents and nannies alike.
Don’t shy away from spending time on yourself for your development. Your personal development will only enable you to become better at what you do.
It's your turn!
