KiwiOz Nanny Helena Flowerday talks about life as a nanny in Dubai...
I guess the best place to start is at the beginning! From a child I wanted to work with children and being a nanny in London was my dream. From mid 2005 - mid 2007 I fulfilled that dream, and returned home only because my visa ran out.
I was back at work as an early childhood teacher just ten days after returning home and I thought I was home to stay! Well for three years I was settled and even brought my first home. But as time went on, I was really starting to think about a return to nannying.
Sadly nannying in New Zealand was not a financially viable option for me so I started to look at overseas options. Many countries were not an option as I couldn't get a visa to work legally but after a bit of research I discovered that I could nanny in Dubai, as my future employer would sponsor me and provide the visa I would need to live and work.
It took 18 months of looking off and on before my dream job appeared!! I was sitting in front of my laptop waiting to have a Skype interview with an agency and while I waited I happened to check out the KiwiOz Nanny Agency London's jobs page and there was my dream job, I couldn't believe it!
I was super excited and within the space of half an hour I had emailed and skyped with Claire at KiwiOz UK and had a phone interview set up for the next day with my soon to be new boss!!
Fast forward three weeks and I was packed up and on my way to Dubai- I can't say I knew what working in Dubai would be like because I really didn't! Apart from knowing that I wouldn't need winter clothes, that the weekend would be Friday and Saturday, and that modest dress was encouraged when out and about, oh and that they drive on the right!!
The first few weeks went by so fast as I got to know the family I would be living and working with and they got to know me- we had not met or skyped with each other prior to our first meeting on the day we all arrived in Dubai! While I wouldn't necessarily recommend going to work as a nanny for a family without meeting them first in my case it has worked out really well. Three and a half years on we are still working together, and the 16month old toddler and 2month old baby are now active, chatty young boys!
Next post I'll tell you some stories about life in Dubai...
