1. Hairy MacLary
This unforgettable series of rhyming stories is about a fictional black dog named Hairy MacLary. He embarks on many fascinating adventures with his animal friends. Hairy MacLary books are meant to be read by an adult to a preschool child. The plots are simple and easily understood by children in the pre-reading age. Every piece of illustration invites curiosity and discussion between the child and the parent.
2. Baa Baa Smart Sheep
This highly-entertaining story is about Little Baa Baa, a bored sheep who is suddenly struck with a mischievous idea when his friend, Quirky Turkey, passes by. Hilarity ensues when the turkey is tricked into eating the sheep’s “smarty tablets.” There’s a little toilet humor here, but it doesn’t hurt a bit!

This picture book is based off a song with funny cumulative lyrics. Guessing the next word after each clue is given spells a lot of fun. This could even be a good introduction to phonics for children learning to read.

This story can stimulate children’s imagination as they read about the little boy exploring his options. This silly little story gets children giggling until the very end!

6. Diary of a Wombat

It’s a virtual geographical and gastronomical tour of the Land Down Under complemented with charming illustrations. What a delightful way for a child to learn about Australia!
8. Fantastic Mr. Fox
Mr. Fox is relentlessly hunted by three farmers after he steals their chickens. The vindictive farmers get all the help they can to dig Mr. Fox and his family out of their home, but they underestimate Mr. Fox’s cleverness and tenacity. This humorous story teaches children about perseverance and strength under pressure as well as the importance of family. The book is suitable for kids six years old and above.
9. Amy and Louis
Amy and Louis is a bittersweet story of two friends who had to part ways and live on opposite sides of the world. They miss each other and the games they played together. However, Louis finds a way to reconnect with Amy. This moving tale emphasizes the beauty of friendship that transcends distance and time.
10. Where is the Green Sheep?
This is a rhyming story about the search for the green sheep. Children will have fun with other sheep as they are introduced in the story. There are sheep of many colors and there are sheep near and far, up and down. Suited for preschool kids, this book is an excellent way for children to learn adjectives and opposites.
You’ve probably read some of these books, but if you haven’t, you will find that these books are very entertaining and interesting even as an adult. It takes a lot of creativity and imagination to write a good’s children’s book. It’s truly a gift that your charges and even their parents will appeciate.
