Choosing to au pair or nanny abroad is a big decision but one of the best you will make in your life. Find out from some of our nannies about the best bits- and the hard bits!
Of course one of the main reasons people move abroad is for the travel and opportunities to see new things. At KiwiOz Nanny Agency London our families understand our nannies will want to travel on their weekends and during their holidays, and encourage them to do just that. On top of that, many families travel to Europe or around the UK and will take you with them- a fantastic way to see new things while you're on the job. One of our nannies Kelsey says:
'The best thing is the people you meet and the travel you can do from London. Europe is so accessible and you can travel to a different country and culture so cheaply. Amsterdam for the weekend with 20 new mates by bus - £15 each way!!!' Kelsey, Nanny
Many of our nannies move to London on the two year Tier 5 Youth Mobility Visa. This is a great visa as you can travel on weekends and public holidays, and you get a minimum of 4 weeks paid annual leave during which time you can travel as well. Usually people will work for 12 - 18 months and save up money before doing a big trip around Europe- some of our nannies have travelled for up to six months!
Meeting new people
It goes without saying that when you travel you meet amazing people and find friends for life. Once you've registered with KiwiOz you'll be invited to join our Facebook group of nannies who have all been through moving to London and will welcome you to the KiwiOz team. We organise regular social events for our nannies in London, and through our Facebook group the nannies organise their own playdates and coffee groups.
" The best thing is new places and people!!! The hardest has been meeting new people although the ones I have found are awesome!" Brie, Nanny
The tough bits and how we cope
Of course moving abroad is not always fun. There are challenging aspects and most nannies suffer from homesickness at one point or another- you should expect it to take 3-6 months to start 'settling in.'
"The hardest thing I've found is just the sheer number of people who live in London alone. Getting some space just to yourself to take a breather can be very hard! Keeping homesickness at bay with Skype plus all the cheap communication apps like voxer, snapchat etc. I write letters too because I can get all my news out in one go, plus it's wicked when you get some back!" Kelsey, Nanny
"Right now the only thing that keeps my homesickness away is the fact I'm getting to travel every few weeks thanks to London being so central to fly around Europe, and London having endless things to explore and do." Emma, Nanny
"I keep homesickness at bay by annoying my mum and face timing her everyday!" Brie, Nanny
Of course your 'Working Holiday' also involves a lot of work! Working as a nanny or au pair can be challenging, especially in the early stages as you get to know the family 'rules' and expectations.
Your consultants at KiwiOz Nanny Agency London are always on hand to support you through the early stages of your placement. You'll have questions and difficult moments, and our consultants and other nannies are the best place to turn for advice.
